England U19 started their tri-series campaign with a 35-run win over Australia. Batting first, England were bowled out for 146, captain Josie Groves top scoring with 57 from 41 runs.
Sunrisers’ Jodi Grewcock played a supporting role, hitting a steady 31 from 33. Extras were England’s helping hand in raising their total with Australia adding 29 on from wides, no balls, byes and leg byes.
Australia’s Hasrat Gill played an important role with bat and ball, taking 4/20 – including 14 dot balls. Sienna Eve took 3-fer while Lucy Hamilton and Bonnie Berry were also among the wickets.
In reply, the young Aussies only managed 111, Alexa Stonehouse dismissing both Kate Pelle and Samara Dulvin for a duck. South Australia’s Eleanor Larosa anchored the innings scoring 41 at around a-run-a-ball. Gill’s attempted were in vain as she scored 40 from 30 but the total was too far out of reach.
England’s strength was their bowling which was far more clinical than their Australian opponents. Registering only eight wides, England’s more experienced attack demonstrated their ability, U19 World Cup finalists Soph Smale and Alexa Stonehouse taking 3/12 and 2/17 respectively.
England will face Sri Lanka next on the 30th March at 4:30am GMT
