England’s first game of the Super 6s was against Ireland — a team with only one win under their belt. Again, England made four changes to their side opting for a strong spin department with Grace Scrivens and Liberty heap opening the batting again.
The opening partnership of Grace Scrivens and Liberty Heap was once again a success and the pair managed to score 55 from the powerplay. Scrivens powerfully struck a huge 6 to bring up another half century from 30 balls. The Kent all-rounder continued this flair, hitting another 6 back of the bowlers head. England’s ferocity meant that their 100 was brought up in the 10th over. Any short bowling from Ireland was dispatched by England and the Heap Scrivens partnership of 136 was a record for the tournament, beating the previous record which they set against Rwanda. It was left-arm spinner Aimee Maguire who had the breakthrough for Ireland as she bowled Liberty Heap for 42 which she scored from 29 deliveries. Grace Scrivens registered has the highest individual total of the tournament, overtaking India’s Shweta Sehrawat. However, birthday girl, Freya Sargent ruined Scrivens’ plans of a century as she bowled her for 93, a total she reached in 56 balls. With four overs remaining, England were 163/2 with Niamh Holland and Seren Smale at the crease. England passed the 200 mark in the final over and a quick 30* from 14 balls by Seren Smale and Niamh Holland’s cameo of 34* from 21 helped England to finish on 207/2.
Ireland’s innings got off to a bad start as a miscommunication in the middle led to Rebecca Gough being run out for 6. Annabel Squires attempted to go up and over the bowler’s head, however, Ryana MacDonald-Gay was positioned perfectly to take the catch. Ireland slipped to 22/3 after four overs as Joanna Loughran was ran out for 3. Grace Scrivens came into the attack and quickly picked up the wicket of Zara Craig who sent the ball straight into the hands of Charis Pavely at mid-wicket. After steadily building a partnership, Georgina Dempsey bottom edged the ball onto her stumps giving MacDonald-Gay her first wicket of the match. Ireland’s innings steadied but the team then fell to 64/7 as Sophia Smale glided the ball onto the stumps sending Siuin Woods back to the pavilion, shortly followed by Abbi Harrison going for 16. It was a Smale special as some quick work behind the stumps by Seren combined with some tidy bowling by Sophia resulted in a wicket — Sophia’s third of the day. England continued their dominance as Hannah Baker built the pressure eventually dismissing Aimee Maguire who scored 14. The Three Lions were victorious in the 17th over as Baker took the final wicket. Ireland were bowled out for 86, England winning by 121 runs.
