It was a key match for both sides in Group D with Scotland sitting in 3rd and South Africa in 4th.
At the toss, Scotland skipper, Katherine Fraser won and elected to bowl. Off-spinner, Olivia Bell opened the bowling, having an instant impact, taking the wicket of Elandri Janse van Rensburg in the first over. South Africa slipped to 19/3 as Captain Katherine Fraser picked up the wickets of Simone Lourens and Oluhle Siyo in her first over. 15-year-old Karabo Meso started her innings positively however left-arm seamer, Niamh Robertson-Jack took two wickets in quick succession, leaving the hosts 50/6 at the end of the 11th over. Western Province’s Kayla Reyneke held her own and brought up her half-century in 46 balls. Reyneke went on to top score with 53 before Fraser struck again. Jenna Evans recovered her innings to score 22 from 29 helping South Africa to finish their innings on 112/7.
Senior player Alisa Lister opened the batting alongside Kent all-rounder, Darcey Carter but after four overs, Scotland had slipped to 21/2. Reyneke shone again, this time with the ball, trapping Emma Walsingham, LBW for 17. Scotland were 37/3 when Fraser came to the crease but she was quickly dismissed for 1 by leg-spinner Seshnie Naidu after an attempted pull shot was caught by Lourens. History repeated itself as Olivia Bell fell for four, the wicket — bowled by Naidu and caught spectacularly by Lourens. A succession of ducks and a four-wicket haul for Madison Landsman left Scotland defeated, all out for 68 resulting in a 44-run victory for South Africa.
This means that Scotland must win their final group game and are reliant on other results in their group going in their favour as they currently sit bottom of the group.
Hosts, South Africa will next play against the UAE at Willowmoore Park, Benoni on Wednesday 18th January at 11:45 (GMT) and Scotland will face India at Willowmoore Park B Field, Benoni at the same time.
