Southern Brave Women 2023

A guide to Southern Brave’s 2023 Squad

Smriti Mandhana (overseas) – Going as the most expensive player in the WPL auction, Smriti Mandhana is one of the most sought-after players in the game. As a left-handed opener, she has added value and the way she has performed for Southern Brave in the last two editions has been outstanding.

Lauren Bell – Taking 14 wickets and playing in every game, Lauren Bell was a key part of England’s attack in the Ashes. Bell has experienced the highs and lows of international cricket over the past 12 months but is well equipped heading into the Hundred.

Maia Bouchier – With good regional form, it was frustrating not to see Maia Bouchier play in the Ashes, only featuring in the T20 squad. Bouchier also put in good performances for England A against Australia A as a top order batter.

Freya Kemp – It’s been reassuring over the past few weeks to see 18-year-old Freya Kemp back bowling before the England matches. After suffering the all-too-common lower back stress fracture, Kemp was ruled out of the T20 World Cup and has only been batting since. It’s unknown if she’ll bowl in the Hundred but her batting is equally impressive.

Danni Wyatt – Danni Wyatt has been one of England’s heroes this summer being ever-present through the Ashes. Featuring in all three formats for the first time, Wyatt has continued to impress and will continue to be a great top order batter for the Brave.

Anya Shrubsole – This will be Anya Shrubsole’s last tournament as a play after announcing her retirement earlier in the summer. Despite being ready to hang up her boots, Shrubsole still has lots to offer and her role as a player-coach at the Southern Vipers has improved her tactical abilities.

Chloe Tryon (overseas) – Familiar to followers of the regional game, South African international, Chloe Tryon is returning to the Hundred. After featuring in the first year, Tryon didn’t return in 2022 but now is back with her new side, Southern Brave. Tryon has recently been playing with the Northern Diamonds, making her accustomed to English conditions.

Maitlan Brown (overseas) – Still uncapped for Australia, Maitlan Brown may have been a surprise inclusion for non-Australian fans. Brown has previously worked under Charlotte Edwards at the Sydney Sixers and her consistent bowling and occasional six makes her perfect for the Hundred.

Georgia Adams – Vipers skipper Georgia Adams is playing for the Southern Brave once again. In recent years, it’s Adams’ bowling which has stood out but she is first a foremost a top to middle order batter.

Rhianna Southby – Rhianna Southby may be keeping for the Southern Brave but has found it difficult to break into the Vipers XI with Nicole Faltum coming in as the overseas star. This will be Southby’s second summer in the Hundred, being part of the Invincibles winning side in 2021.

Danielle Gregory – Oval Invincibles has been swapped for Southern Brave as leg spinner, Danielle Gregory moves down south. She’ll be hoping to collect a third winners medal as she moves to her second team.

Kalea Moore – Previously playing for Northern Superchargers, Kalea Moore couldn’t be further way, moving to the Southern Brave. Moore has had a drought of wickets in the last few weeks but has been quite cheap.

Seren Smale – It could be 18-year-old Seren Smale with the gloves as she will join the Hundred for the first time. Batting for the Thunder and England U19, Smale has been excellent and has developed a reputation as quite a chirpy keeper behind the stumps!

Ellie Anderson – Teammates with Smale in the U19 World Cup, Ellie Anderson has since made her senior debut for the Central Sparks. Nicknamed ‘Jimmy’ after seam bowler Jimmy Anderson, Ellie is also a seam bowler, taking 5-fer in the U19 World Cup.

Mary Taylor – Mary Taylor was on standby as a non-travelling reserve for the U19 World Cup bust spent time in Loughborough training with the squad. Taylor is now a regular for the Southern Vipers, a challenging team to break in to.
